krapfen, bitte

what germany lacks in mexican food (i would trade a kidney for some baja fresh right now) it more than makes up for in its abundance of bakeries. seriously, they are EVERYWHERE.

today we ventured out to OBI, which is the equivalent of home depot or lowes in the US. front and center of the store is a “der beck” – which is a bakery chain found everywhere around here. piper immediately spotted her favorite pastry as we walked in, and suddenly it was like in the cartoons where the characters’ eyes go all googly and hypnotized, and all she could see or think was, “krapfen … krapfen … krapfen …” (puffy doughnut thing filled with cream or jelly). how could we deny that?

after unsuccessfully circling the store in search of some supplies for a project i’m working on for the apartment, i stumbled upon a fun little section that i hadn’t noticed in previous OBI visits – the 1 euro section. GOOD TIMES!

for some reason the whole “1 euro” thing totally made me laugh. it just seemed like such a funny literal translation of something back home (wen kept calling it the “Euro Tree”) and i couldn’t stop giggling. i also got caught up in the potential for purchase – we’re on a tight budget right now, but i figured we could swing 1 euro if something really caught my eye. at one point i was holding a stack of brightly colored trays and saying, “hmmm, i wonder what i could use these for?” to which wen replied, “em, seriously. if you have to ask yourself that, THEN CLEARLY YOU DON’T NEED THEM.”

the trays went back, sadly.

exciting times in germany, my friends. the glamourous life of an expat.

oh! so tonight wen went to a basketball game which meant it was just me & the chicklets for an evening sans daddy.  for some reason i interpreted this to mean we should EAT as if we were at a slumber party – the menu included: frozen pizza, mac & cheese, popcorn, chips & salsa and a handful of chocolate chips. good lord. all i needed was some red vines, trace / sar / andrea / kylie, a VHS copy of “shag” and it would have been 6th grade all over again. tomorrow i will remember that i am now THIRTY-SIX and should know better. but it was fun while it lasted.

good night from bavaria. xo.
